2026 TEAM EMC Bike Ride

The annual TEAM EMC Bike Ride was held on Thursday, August 6, starting and ending at the main entrance of the Hilton Anatole Hotel (1). The ride was led by John McCloskey, who was joined by two other riders willing to brave the Dallas heat, Michael Oliver and Patrick Deroy. Outgoing EMC Society President John LaSalle provided moral support along with the beautiful new TEAM EMC jerseys designed by Susanne Vogel.
It was a beautiful sunny morning for a nice 14-mile loop. Of course, I could not resist taking our Power Trio on a tour of sites associated with an historic event for which Dallas is well-known (and probably wishes the world would forget), the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. The tragic events of that awful day have been debated for over 60 years as of this writing, and that is a subject beyond the scope of this short article. I was primarily taking my riding buddies on a tour of places where known events occurred.
Our first stop was Dealey Plaza. We stood not far from the spot where Howard Brennan stood when he saw a man pointing a rifle out of window at the east end of 6th floor of the former Texas School Book Depository (2), now the Dallas County Administration Building. After Brennan told police what he saw, they sealed the building and the supervisor did a roll call. One employee was missing. His name was Lee Harvey Oswald.
The Sixth Floor of the building has been a museum for many years and is well worth a visit. And of course, there is the infamous “Grassy Knoll” (3).
We jumped ahead in time, heading east on Main Street to the Dallas Police Department building and the door that Jack Ruby entered (4) before shooting Oswald two days later.
We headed south on the Jefferson Boulevard Viaduct bike lane to Oswald’s Rooming House on Beckley Street (5), where he arrived about 30 minutes after the assassination, changed his jacket, and grabbed his revolver. We continued south on Patton Street to the site where Oswald shot officer J.D. Tippit (6) four times at close range in front of several witnesses.
From there, we traced Oswald’s steps down East Jefferson Boulevard, where he ran into to the Texas Theater (7) without buying a ticket. This aroused suspicion, along with the fact that he matched the description of the man who had just shot Officer Tippit. The police were called and they entered the theater. When they surrounded Oswald, he said, “It’s all over now,” pulled his revolver, and tried to shoot one of the officers at close range. The gun misfired, and he was subdued and taken into custody. We already saw where he had met his end two days later.
Of course, many theories have circulated about the events of that day, many of which exclude Oswald’s participation. I will pose the same simple question that I posed to Michael and Patrick: Do these sound like the actions of an innocent man?
That concluded the tour, and we headed back northward. We got a final picture of the beautful Dallas skyline from the Trinity River Trail (8) before arriving back at the Anatole. We even got Patrick back in time to give his demonstration at 10:00 AM!
